A Celebration of Latvian Heritage: The 2026 Open-Air Museum Fair

On 6–7 June 2026, the grounds of the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum once again came alive with the sights, sounds, and traditions of Latvia’s largest folk arts and crafts fair. Held from 09:00 to 17:00 on both days, the annual Folk Applied Arts Fair welcomed thousands of visitors, more than 500 craftsmen, food producers, performers, and culture enthusiasts from across the country.

A Tradition That Marks the Beginning of Summer

For more than fifty years, the Open-Air Museum Fair has been one of Latvia’s most significant cultural events. Set among historic farmsteads on the shores of Lake Jugla, the fair offers a unique opportunity to experience traditional Latvian craftsmanship, folklore, music, and cuisine in an authentic environment. The event is not only a marketplace but also a living exhibition of Latvia’s cultural heritage.

Saturday, 6 June: Opening Day

The fair officially opened at 09:00, as visitors streamed through the museum gates to explore hundreds of stalls featuring handmade ceramics, woven textiles, wooden crafts, jewelry, traditional clothing, natural cosmetics, and local delicacies. Throughout the day, artisans demonstrated ancient skills and techniques, allowing visitors to witness the craftsmanship behind their products.

The cultural programme featured performances by folk dance ensembles, folklore groups, and musicians, filling the museum grounds with traditional Latvian songs and dances. Theatre lovers enjoyed performances of Rūdolfs Blaumanis’ “Zagļi” at 11:00 ir 14:00, staged by the Skulte Amateur Theatre “Vinda”.

Visitors also had the chance to participate in traditional activities, including butter churning, mitten knitting, folk games, and cultural demonstrations that showcased everyday life in historical Latvia.

Sunday, 7 June: Culture and Community

The second day began once again at 09:00, welcoming visitors for another full day of cultural experiences. Folk musicians, dance groups, and folklore ensembles entertained audiences throughout the museum grounds, while families enjoyed workshops, tastings, and educational activities designed for all ages.

A highlight of Sunday’s programme was the staging of “Skroderdienas Silmačos”, one of Latvia’s most beloved theatrical works, performed at 11:00 ir 14:00 by the Baloži People’s Theatre.

More than 530 craftsmen and producers participated in the fair, offering visitors an impressive selection of traditional and contemporary handmade products. From wool blankets and linen garments to honey, herbal teas, bread, and smoked foods, the fair celebrated the diversity and quality of Latvian craftsmanship.

More Than a Market

What makes the Open-Air Museum Fair special is its atmosphere. Beyond shopping and entertainment, the event serves as a meeting place where traditions are preserved and shared between generations. Visitors can engage directly with craftsmen, learn about ancient techniques, and gain a deeper understanding of Latvia’s cultural identity.

The museum’s historic setting, featuring authentic buildings from all regions of Latvia, provides the perfect backdrop for this celebration of national heritage. As visitors wandered through the fairgrounds, they experienced not only a market but a living connection to Latvia’s past and present.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 Open-Air Museum Fair once again demonstrated why it remains one of the country’s most anticipated cultural events. With its rich programme, talented artisans, traditional foods, and vibrant performances, the fair successfully brought together people of all ages to celebrate Latvia’s living heritage. As the event concluded on Sunday evening at 17:00, visitors left with memorable experiences, handcrafted treasures, and a renewed appreciation for the traditions that continue to shape Latvian culture today.
